Basic Information

The City Arborist generally requires replacement trees of 2.5” caliper, but what does that mean? To put it into perspective, these are the specifications for a tree that size:

  • A 2.5” caliper means that the trunk of the tree is 2.5” in diameter (not circumference) at 6” above the soil level

  • Root Ball Size : average of 24” - 32”. This size will generally be available in a balled & burlapped form.

  • Weight : trees this size can average 400 - 500 pounds

  • Height : average of 12’ - 14’ tall

Recompense

A recompense may be paid for trees that are smaller than the required size. That fee will be determined by calculating the difference in caliper size. You will need to discuss the fees with the City Arborist’s office.

This is the calculation used by the city to determine the fee (from the COA webiste):

Recompense - The difference between the number of trees removed, destroyed or injured (Nrem) and the number of trees replaced (Nrep) on a site times the established recompense value shall be calculated as partial recompense to the tree trust fund. In addition, the difference between the total diameter at breast height of the trees removed or destroyed (TDBHrem) and the total caliper inches of the trees replaced on site (TCIrep), as indicated on the approved tree replacement plan, shall be calculated as partial recompense to the tree trust fund. Total recompense(R) shall be calculated according to the formula R = $100.00 (Nrem - Nrep) + $30.00 (TDBHrem - TCIrep), C >=0

The Standard Recompense formula is: $100 [(# trees destroyed + # trees lost) - # trees replaced] + $30.00 [(DBH inches destroyed + DBH inches lost) - caliper inches replaced]

Sourcing & Delivering

Sourcing is best done directly through a tree farm or tree company. Most of these businesses can deliver direct to the customers, and some even have installation services. Garden*Hood does not source, deliver, or plant balled-and-burlapped trees. We don’t have the equipment needed to handle trees of that size / weight.
